At its meeting at the end of May, the Prague City Council designated the superior cycle routes A1 to A9 as key transportation projects.

This decision was made as an addition to the resolution of the City Council No. 2/7 dated March 23, 2023, which instructed the City Council to present a schedule for the implementation of certain key transportation projects, including budgetary requirements.

The impact of this decision is primarily symbolic and does not have a direct influence on the implementation of the superior cycle routes. However, the implementation of these routes is now recognized as a significant component of transportation investments based on the City Council’s decision.

What are the superior cycle routes?

The Prague city-wide system of cycle routes includes so-called superior, backbone, and main routes. It is a system that, once completed, should provide basic and safe connectivity throughout the city for cyclists.

Superior routes are the highest category and are designated by codes A1 – A9 (+ the city ring A50). In essence, they are considered „cycle highways,“ corridors where high-quality and segregated cycling infrastructure is intended to be developed in the future. These corridors were recently defined within the entire system, with the first superior routes being defined in the 2019 update. This was also a response to the development of several cycle paths along former railway lines (such as Vršovická railway promenade, and the cycle path along the Kladno railway line).

Backbone routes, marked with double-digit codes A10 – A99, ensure basic cycling connectivity across all areas of Prague. The former backbone routes A1 and A2 have been redefined since 2019 as part of the superior cycle routes.

Main routes are identified by triple-digit codes A100 – A999 and primarily provide locally significant cycling connections, further densifying the basic system of superior and backbone routes.
