A survey revealed that one-fifth of Prague 1 residents would ride bicycles if conditions were better

One of the key findings of the research is that the media’s shortcut regarding the dispute between advocates of car usage and pedestrian or cycling transportation does not hold true. The majority of residents share a dislike for transit car traffic and non-resident parking. Instead, there is a clear duality between „locals“ and „foreign and burdensome“ elements, where „foreign“ – transit traffic and non-resident parking – bother both pedestrians and drivers. A large majority lacks parking space and is also dissatisfied with the overall number of cars, traffic congestion, and cars parked on the streets.

The majority of respondents would propose increasing parking fees in the blue zone for embassy and government vehicles (66%), a significant portion also for businesses with premises (47%), and second and additional household vehicles (42%).

A significantly larger number of people would ride bicycles if given the opportunity

The overwhelming majority of Prague 1 residents regularly use public transportation and walk in the city, while 21% of residents drive cars daily, and another 35% only drive cars a few times a month.

6% of Prague 1 residents ride bicycles daily, and 18% of residents ride them several times a month. However, this percentage could increase. Just under one-fifth currently do not ride bicycles but would like to if it were easier or safer. Only slightly less than a third of residents are satisfied with the support for cycling transportation, while less than half are satisfied in the rest of Prague.

A slight majority (58%) would support more car-free zones, i.e., streets for pedestrians, public transportation, and cyclists. Only one in eight (8%) believes that there are too many car-free zones.
