An unobtrusive section of the superior cycling route A8 in Kyje

The new park, of which the path is a part, stretches out over a narrow strip south of Kyje between Českobrodská Street and the railway track. The new path is approximately 800 meters long and extends from Průmyslová Street to Objízdná Street.

On the western edge, the new bike path connects to existing informal off-road cycling routes from Malešice and to recently legalized sidewalks along Průmyslová Street. Unfortunately, the eastern end of the new path is currently closed off, and the path does not directly connect to any clear cycling corridor in the eastern direction. Therefore, only the western part of the new section is likely to find use in terms of cycling traffic at present.

The remaining eastern parts will primarily serve recreation, as indicated by the number of planned resting places and the construction of a circular termination.

New connections to Kyje

A significant improvement with the newly constructed paths is the better integration of Kyje into cycling corridors along the railway track from Malešice and the recently legalized cycle paths along Průmyslová Street. Although bike crossings were established at the intersection of Českobrodská and Rožmberská as early as 2013, they were previously connected on the southeast side to unauthorized sidewalks. The current construction of the park in this area not only involved repairing the surfaces of these sidewalks but also introduced a clear regime allowing cyclists to enter. A path for pedestrians and cyclists is marked in the area.

However, this is not the only novelty in connecting Kyje. Along with the new path and park, another completely new crossing has been created, combined with a bike crossing across Českobrodská a bit to the east for a more direct connection to Dářská. It can be expected that better connections to Sýkovecká will also be established in the future.

A future part of the superior cycling route A8

Although the current path may seem like a fairly generous project for such a tucked-away park between a busy road and a railway, offering only a few rather local connections from the perspective of cycling traffic, the situation could be different in the future. According to the Prague cycling route system, the area should be part of the superior cycling route A8, connecting along the railway and in the corridor of the former cladding the area of the Žižkov cargo railway station with Malešice, Dolní Počernice, Běchovice, and Horní Počernice.

Therefore the entire stretch can be seen more as part of the future cycling corridor from Vinohrady and Žižkov towards the east of Prague. The future construction of the railway station Praha Kyje – Jiráskova čtvrť is also planned in the area, which will again add further significance to the entire project, which may not be immediately apparent at first glance.

However, for the entire investment to truly make sense, these projects must be implemented. The editor of „Městem na kole“ informally spoke with several stakeholders actively involved in cycling projects in the area, and they confirm that there are plans for connecting paths both to the west and east. Unfortunately, they are struggling to progress these plans further into the next stages of project preparation. Therefore, one cannot expect additional sections of the A8 cycling route to be connected in the nearest months or years.

At the same time, during the visit of the „Městem na kole“ editor in July of this year, it was already evident that some newly constructed recreational parts of the project are gradually returning to nature. It can only be hoped that at least the railway station will be established here as soon as possible, attracting a larger number of park users.
