People will be able to ride bicycles in both directions in two one-way sections on Biskupcova and Ambrožova streets in Prague 3. This decision was made by the council of the city district. Deputy Mayor of Prague 3 for Transportation, Ondřej Rut (Greens), told ČTK that he would like to establish so-called contraflow bike lanes in other streets as well, but so far, he has not been able to convince coalition partners. Prague 3 has been governed by a coalition of TOP 09, STAN, Pirates, Prague 3 Sobě, and the Greens since last year.
The aim of the measure is to improve the traffic flow on the streets for cyclists who often use sidewalks instead of the road in one-way streets. The first two-way section will be on Ambrožova between Jilmova and Biskupcova, and the second on Biskupcova between Loudova and Za Žižkovskou vozovnou.
According to the material approved by the council, the municipality has prepared projects for a total of seven contraflow bike lanes. In addition to the ones already approved, they could be implemented on Jeseniova, Habrová, Bořivojova, Orlická streets, and another section of Biskupcova.
According to Rut, the commission for transportation of the municipality expressed a positive opinion on the two approved sections, while they discussed the others but did not take a stance on them. Rut added that for all proposed measures, the municipality has a favorable opinion from the Czech Police, stating that the changes will not jeopardize the flow or safety of traffic.
According to Rut, he is also struggling to convince coalition partners to establish contraflow bike lanes in other sections. He said, „I think it’s more of an ideological debate than a practical one.“ He added that he will continue to push for these measures. He emphasized the need to improve traffic flow for cyclists, mainly to prevent them from riding on the sidewalks. The coalition in Prague 3 has the conversion of selected one-way streets for cyclists into two-way streets in its coalition agreement.
