Prague will get its third bike depot. It will be located in Zahradní Město

This will be the third bike depot in Prague. The first has been operational at Florenc since 2020, and the second opened at Anděl in 2021. Both have been successful, with companies being interested in using them. The bike depot allows delivery companies to transfer packages from large shipments to smaller transportation means, such as electric scooters, cargo bikes, or small electric cars. These vehicles then distribute the packages to their final destination in the nearby area, known as the ‚last mile.‘

Praha 10 states that using smaller transportation means eliminates issues such as blocking and damaging sidewalks, intersections, or dangerous situations caused by supply vehicles parking at crosswalks or in their vicinity. „The streets of Prague 10 can thus become safer,“ writes the district.

Micro depots as a current trend

Micro depots and the shift in transportation methods of certain shipments are a trend supported not only by cities across Europe but also by delivery companies aiming to reduce emissions and enhance delivery efficiency. A significant challenge of the current delivery model is the limited availability of loading zones for large deliveries. Some studies indicate that drivers spend up to 25% of their time searching for parking spaces.

A logistic depot will be established in Prague 10 on half of the currently underutilized P+R parking lot near the tram loop in Zahradní Město. The parking lot was completed in 2021, and the P+R mode allowing parking for a maximum of 12 hours will be retained. The establishment of the micro depot is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
