The ministry has decided that bicycle parking will be mandatory at schools

Originally, the ministry intended to increase the number of parking spaces for cars around newly constructed apartments, shops, and offices. However, after facing criticism, the regulations will be relaxed, and the required minimums will be slightly reduced. The minimum of one parking space for cars will be 120 square meters of floor space for the apartment; initially, there were plans for two parking spaces for apartments larger than 70 square meters. The obligation to build parking spaces for new parks will also be eliminated.

Bicycles at schools

The decree will now take into account cycling transportation. There will be an obligation to build stands for bicycles and scooters at newly constructed schools and preschools.

„Based on feedback, we have introduced the requirement to designate parking spaces for bicycles in buildings intended for education,“ said Petr Waleczko, the ministry’s spokesperson, to Deník N.

The rule adjustment will come with a new decree concerning technical requirements for construction. It is still in the legislative process and may undergo further changes.

Lack of secure parking

Currently, a significant portion of schools and kindergartens lacks a safe place for parking bicycles and scooters. Bicycle parking is also missing at newly built institutions, as demonstrated, for example, by the new construction of U Elektry Elementary School in Prague 9.

Conversely, schools that have built bike sheds or racks motivate students and staff to use this environmentally friendly and active mode of transportation.
