The city of Jičín will be the next Czech city to operate a shared bike system. At the beginning of February, the city council signed a contract with Nextbike Czech Republic. The operation will be partially funded by a subsidy from the Hradec Králové Region.
In the first year of operation there will be 60 bicycles available on the streets of the sixteen-thousand-strong city. These will be located at 20 stations. Jičín aims to promote sustainable transportation by introducing bike-sharing. The first fifteen minutes of the ride will be free for all users. For each subsequent half hour, a fee of 25 crowns will be charged.
The placement of the 20 stations is based on transportation studies conducted by the city in previous years. In addition to Jičín itself, shared bikes will also be available in Popovice, which is connected to Jičín by a cycle path. There will also be a station in the village of Robousy, which, however, lacks a safe connection to the city.
The city will pay 1.3 million crowns for the operation, with the region contributing half a million crowns. Nextbike was the only company to participate in the public tender.
In the 2023 CykloRank ranking, evaluating the amount of cycling infrastructure, Jičín placed 29th out of 125 Czech cities with over 10,000 inhabitants.
