As we previously reported in a brief news piece, at the beginning of March Brno city management launched a cycling survey. The survey can be filled out until May 5th. The city invites those who ride bicycles, as well as scooters and other similar means of transport, around the city to share their suggestions, feelings, and findings, which are to be one of the foundations for the city’s new cycling strategy.
City hall’s spokesperson, Filip Poňuchálek, stated this in a press release introducing the survey. The city is interested in making cycling safe and accessible to everyone.
To achieve this, the current infrastructure is far from sufficient, which the city acknowledges in the accompanying text to the survey. „We are aware that the conditions for cycling in Brno are not ideal. Although we are now striving for better cycling conditions, it is important to have a new plan for the future – a new Cycling Strategy for the city. It will detail how to create a safer and more pleasant environment for cycling in Brno,“ the survey notes. It is available on the city’s website Dáme na vás. Contributions can be made until May 5th, and it is not necessary to have a permanent residence in Brno.
Completing the survey takes about 15 minutes. It includes emotional maps, where respondents can precisely indicate places they consider problematic from a cycling perspective or, conversely, safe. This is the first survey on a special newly created platform. „This tool allows people to share their opinions and experiences with us in a simple way. We can use the valuable data as a basis for creating various documents and evaluating projects and their impact. It also serves as a quick dive into public opinion for us, although, of course, the survey cannot be mistaken for a representative sociological study,“ said council member Petr Bořecký (ANO).
Brno had its first plan for where and how to create cycling routes at the beginning of the 90s and has gradually created and updated further documents, usually referred to as cyklogenerely. However, their implementation in practice has been lagging for a long time, so Brno still lacks the necessary continuous infrastructure. Safe infrastructure separated from motor traffic, at least in the form of bike lanes, is mostly missing in the broader center of Brno. The city also ignored cycling in the past when reconstructing significant streets, and no measures were created in such streets. Continuous bike paths separated from cars basically exist only along rivers, which, however, are more suitable for recreational cycling.
