Last July, České Budějovice opened the new Vltava leisure area, through which the Cepákova cycle path originally ran. The relocation of the cycle path to the edge of the area was planned but not completed in conjunction with the leisure area. The city banned cycling on the path through the area. A year after the opening of the leisure area, the alternative cycle path is now also being opened.

This approach, where the leisure area was opened without an adequate solution for cycling through it, was criticized a year ago by the Cyklo Budějovice association. Deputy Mayor Petr Maroš (ODS) disagreed with the association’s criticism. He told the Budějovická Drbna website that the path was initially marked with signs warning of increased pedestrian traffic. “If people had respected them, we wouldn’t have had to take such measures. But that didn’t happen,” he responded to Budějovická Drbna.

However, the Cyklo Budějovice association pointed out that the proposal to restrict cycling on the path was submitted on July 13, 2023, according to the official notice board, before the leisure area was opened on July 21. According to the association, the city’s intention from the beginning was to restrict the passage.

The construction of the relocated cycle path was eventually completed in record time, the city said in its press release. The passage for cyclists was thus restored one year after the opening of the leisure area. “We are opening the cycle path now for all cyclists and skaters. Just please be careful, there will be signs saying ‚You are passing through a construction site‘, the path will be officially approved in mid-June and then it will be officially opened,” explained Deputy Mayor Petr Maroš.

Mayor Dagmar Škodová Parmová (ODS) praised the good cooperation between České Budějovice and the South Bohemian Region, which leads to the quick realization of public constructions such as the Vltava sports complex. „The negotiations around the investment and all the permits were not easy, and I would like to thank the management and officials from both the city and the region because all the permits were obtained in a very short time.“
