Prague 3 has added two-way bike lanes on the streets of Jeseniova, Ambrožova, Habrová, Bořivojova, and Orlická. These lanes facilitate cycling on side streets and aim to reduce sidewalk riding.

Two-way cycling has been introduced on five one-way streets using vertical signs and contraflow bike pictograms, which are marked closer to the center of the street for visibility. This marking serves as guidance: when encountering cars or cyclists coming from the opposite direction, both drivers pass each other on the right side of the road or according to local conditions.

Two-way cycling is now permitted on the following street sections:

  • Ambrožova (Biskupcova–Jilmová), 200 meters
  • Biskupcova (Rečkova–Ambrožova), 70 meters
  • Biskupcova (Buchovcova–Na Vápence), 190 meters
  • Biskupcova (Za Žižkovskou vozovnou–Loudova), 110 meters
  • Bořivojova (Lucemburská–Ondříčkova), 250 meters
  • Habrová (Buková–Osiková), 300 meters
  • Jeseniova (Jana Želivského–Ambrožova), 230 meters
  • Orlická (Vinohradská–Lucemburská), 180 meters

“We selected streets for two-way bike lanes that are sufficiently wide and that shorten cyclists‘ routes on important routes, avoiding busy main streets,” explained Ondřej Rut, councilor for transport from the Green Party. The City District Council approved these two-way lanes for implementation a year ago.

Approval was not granted for a two-way bike lane on the section of Biskupcova in front of the Žižkov depot exit. The reason was that trams would need to yield to cyclists exiting Biskupcova Street. However, trams are already required to yield to all vehicles when leaving the service road.

How do two-way bike lanes help?

In general, the two-way bike lanes  over 1.5 kilometers of road in total improve accessibility for cyclists on side streets. Cyclists in areas with new two-way bike lanes no longer need to weave through a maze of one-way streets, which were primarily designed to accommodate car parking or to reduce through-traffic in residential areas.

The two-way bike lanes on Orlická and Bořivojova simplify access to Vinohrady. The lanes on Jeseniova, Ambrožova, and Biskupcova improve travel through quieter streets, both towards and away from the city center. These new sections connect with existing two-way bike lanes on Jeseniova (since 2014) and Jilmová (since 2021). The newest addition, Habrová Street, is the only quiet connection from upper Žižkov heading out from the city center.
