The city of Olomouc continues its support for sustainable mobility. Recently, more than 70 new bike and scooter racks were installed at three primary schools and three kindergartens, creating parking spaces for 138 bicycles and 18 scooters.
The racks were placed at Gorkého Primary School (12 bike racks), Svatoplukova Primary School (30 racks), Stupkova Primary School (16 racks and 2 for scooters), Škrétova Kindergarten (5 racks for bikes and 1 for scooters), Rooseveltova Kindergarten (3 racks), and Lužická Kindergarten (3 racks). The selection of schools and kindergartens was made in consultation with the city’s educational institutions. „We were pleasantly surprised at how quickly the new racks started being used at the schools,“ said Martin Luňáček from the City Architect’s Office.
The racks were funded as part of the NXTLVL Parking project, which is co-financed by the European Interreg Central Europe Programme 2021-2027.
This project not only provides new bike racks but also offers the public a chance to get involved. In May 2024, the public could suggest new locations for racks, parking boxes for shared bikes and scooters, and combined parking spaces via a special mapping app. A total of 102 suggestions were received, from which experts selected 40 suitable locations. „Based on these sites, we developed a three-year action plan to install 114 racks with a capacity for 228 bicycles and nine parking boxes,“ added Olomouc’s cycling coordinator, Stanislav Losert.
