The traffic situation around Mikoláš Aleš Elementary School in Prague’s Suchdol district has recently improved thanks to measures implemented through tactical urbanism. Crosswalks have been shortened, sightlines improved, and cycle pictogram corridors have been added to ensure safer cycling – all without any construction work.
The changes enhance conditions and safety for all road users, especially pedestrians. Narrowing wide asphalt areas down to the required standard widths clarifies the situation for drivers as well – including bus routes that pass through the area. The main Prague cycle route A18 also runs here.
The traffic adjustments are non-structural, using paint, bollards, and speed cushions. In front of the school, the red-and-white railing and fence were removed and replaced with a seating wall.
Directly in front of the school entrance, diagonal walkways were built to shorten the path to the crosswalks. In the summer of 2024, the street Suchdolská underwent comprehensive maintenance, including asphalt resurfacing.
A highlight of the project is the colorful pavement art accompanying the newly expanded sidewalk areas and street corners. It symbolizes the transformation around the school and visually separates the extended sidewalk from the roadway. In addition to the artist, local schoolchildren also took part in creating the artwork.
The project is part of the “Safe Routes to School” initiative organized by the group Pěšky městem (Walk the City). The Prague-Suchdol district carried out the implementation, with traffic design by the Květoslav Syrový Traffic Studio.
