Last year’s reconstruction of Vodičkova Street brought back historic rough cobblestones into the road surface. While the outcome respects heritage preservation requirements, it presents an uncomfortable challenge for people on bikes. Fortunately, there’s a practical tip that can make the ride at least a bit more pleasant.
When riding along Vodičkova in either direction, we recommend sticking to the strip of cobblestones located in the second row to the right of the right tram rail (i.e., just to the left of the right-hand tram rail). This strip is relatively even and aligned, and although it’s narrow, it allows for a significantly smoother ride than the center section between the rails, where the cobblestones are very rough and broken.
Riding this way requires a certain amount of focus – it’s ideal to look a few meters ahead rather than directly under your front wheel. Even though the strip isn’t wide, you can get used to it after a few rides, and the ride becomes much more comfortable. However, you do need to watch out for the tram rails – you’ll be riding quite close to their edge, and a mistake could result in an unpleasant drop into the groove. Still, riding on the smoother strip can be safer than bouncing along the rough cobbles in the center of the track.
It’s important to stress that such “connoisseur” tricks can’t replace systematic urban infrastructure solutions. Unfortunately, during the tram track reconstruction, it wasn’t possible to push through for smoother and safer cobblestones more suitable for cycling. The heritage authority at the time disagreed, since Vodičkova Street wasn’t designated as a major bike route.
Only after the reconstruction was completed did Prague’s Commission for Cycling Infrastructure recommend establishing an official route along this street. Hopefully, the situation can be improved during the next reconstruction. Until then, we’ll have to rely on such improvised workarounds.
