Slavičín in the Zlín region has completed the construction of a bicycle path that connects the town center with Hrádek. The cycle path named ‚Za Zemánky‘ is just under half a kilometer long. While not a very long stretch, it is crucial for the safe movement of pedestrians and cyclists, many of whom head to the trails, said the town mayor Tomáš Chmela (independent), according to ČTK.
This segment has filled a gap in the local protected cycling infrastructure. It has connected the path leading to the center of Slavičín with a calm motor-free road towards Šanov and the Slovak border. The latter was reconstructed last year, receiving a high-quality new surface. In the coming years, the town plans to build another cycle path from Hrádek to the Slavičín district of Divnice and Bohuslavice nad Vláří. This would connect the regional long-distance cycle route D4 and the regional route R9, creating a junction of several significant cycling routes.
The preparation of the new bicycle path began in 2019 and is linked to the regional concept of cycling transportation, which determined that a long-distance cycling route would run from Slavičín to Šanov, extending to the Slovak border. Therefore, Slavičín prepared the main connecting section to Šanov, which also leads to the popular Slavex trails. This year, the segment ‚Za Zemánky‘ followed, connecting the cycle path from the town center, ending at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, and Družstevní I Street. Now cyclists can avoid heavy traffic and the newly constructed roundabout in Hrádek. ‚Za Zemánky‘ Street features bicycle markings, and the speed limit is set at 30 km/h.
„With the construction of the bicycle path along Družstevní I Street in Hrádek, we have fulfilled several obligations. We have replaced the missing sidewalk for the residents and provided cyclists with a safe passage through the exposed part of Hrádek. Lastly, we have also improved the clarity of this section of the regional road,“ stated Chmela.
During the construction, connecting the many driveways to family houses proved to be complicated. „Historically, the terrain here was much lower, hence the driveways are steeper, although still compliant with current standards. Nevertheless, during the construction, every centimeter was fought for to maintain a user standard for the owners of adjacent properties,“ the mayor explained.
The new segment of the cycle path features a removable pavement surface, beneath which lies a network of utilities and waterways. The construction of the cycle path cost nearly five million Czech Crowns, with a European subsidy of three million Czech Crowns.
As previously mentioned, the new segment not only simplifies local movement within Slavičín but is also part of a broader concept of long-distance cycling routes within the Zlín Region. In addition to a potential connection to the Slovak border through Šanov, Slavičín serves as a significant transit point towards the Bevlava cycling path. This unique fifty-kilometer route aims to seamlessly connect cycling corridors along the Váh and Bečva rivers through the Vlára valley.
Several final sections remain to be completed on the Bevlava cycling path. Slavičín is a crucial local point through which cycling connections to Luhačovice and other nearby towns are planned, precisely towards the Bevlava cycling path.
