Hornokrčská Street in Prague 4 underwent a complete reconstruction this autumn. A new contraflow bikelane has been marked, making the street a side alternative to the busy Budějovická Street.
The one-way, 150-meter-long section of Hornokrčská Street between Pod Rovinou and U Krčské vodárny streets used to be one-way for both cars and bicycles. The introduction of a contraflow bikelane means that Hornokrčská Street can now be used as a cycling route from Budějovická to Krč, providing an alternative to the often congested Budějovická Street. Additionally, pedestrians and cyclists can use legalized sidewalks to travel off the main road towards Krč, connecting to cycling routes A22, A212, or towards Thomayer Hospital.
The contraflow bikelane was added to the project at the request of Prague 4, which submitted a proposal for its introduction following a citizen’s initiative (the author of this article, note by the editor) in May 2021.
The remaining part of the street, like the one-way section, is now entirely resurfaced with smooth asphalt and falls within a 30 km/h zone. Calming elements include parking bays and several speed bumps.
