Pardubice, one of the best cities for cyclists in the Czech Republic, is continuing its efforts to improve cycling infrastructure after years of resting on its laurels. In a city where nearly 30,000 journeys are made by bike every day, changes have been made to traffic markings in the Zelené Předměstí area to make cycling easier and more enjoyable.

As part of the renewal of horizontal traffic markings and the establishment of paid parking zones, the city of Pardubice has also considered cyclists. A new two-way cycling path has been marked on Jungmannova Street, creating a north-south connection in the area near Čs. legií Square. Additionally, cycling against the traffic flow has been legalized on both the northern and southern edges of this square. Along with these measures for cyclists, traffic calming has been implemented in the area— a 30 km/h zone has been introduced, new pedestrian crossings have been added, and right-of-way has been established at all intersections.

Another important development is the marking of a protected bike lane on K Polabinám Street, the third implementation of this type of measure in the city. The nearly 200-meter-long integration of cycling will enable safer passage for cyclists. However, the section for lane positioning before the signalized intersection with Palackého Třída remains unresolved.

On this street, cycling on the sidewalk was also supposed to be legalized, which would be beneficial for those who are still afraid to ride in traffic with cars. Additionally, bike crossings were planned to improve both cross and longitudinal connections for cyclists. However, the legalization of cycling in the adjacent area has been put on hold by the Department of Transportation. During the summer, individual sections are expected to be evaluated, and the final form of the measures will be determined.

Pardubice, known for the high popularity of cycling, is striving to keep up with the growing number of cyclists. In the busiest parts of the city, such as the Pavla Wonky Bridge, up to 3,000 people cycle daily. The renewal of traffic markings, which began in the spring, will continue, especially with the expansion of paid parking into other parts of the city. This step is necessary due to the high number of commuters from surrounding villages who currently park their cars for free in the city’s outskirts.

According to available information, the city of Pardubice will continue to focus on cyclists and plans to implement further cycling integration measures. Pardubice thus confirms its reputation as a Czech cycling haven, where riding a bike is not only an ecological choice but also a safe and convenient one.
