The new cyclepath on 17th November Avenue in the center of Olomouc is almost finished

Direct connections to the cyclepaths have been created for the Faculty of Science of Palacký University and the Supreme Public Prosecutor’s Office. The cyclepath was constructed using a solution commonly used in Olomouc, featuring a separate sidewalk path with distinct lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. The cycling traffic is bidirectional, running along the eastern side of the street.

Thus, cyclist traffic is completely separated from both motorized and pedestrian traffic. The crossing of side streets is managed at the level of the roadway, not at an elevated level of the cyclepath/sidewalk. The chosen solution suffers slightly in the Czech context from the fact that even though the cyclepath runs parallel to the main road, according to Czech regulations, cyclists usually lose priority at the crossings of side streets.

An interesting aspect of the entire section is the use of a previously built and never officially marked segment of the cyclepath along the Faculty of Science of Palacký University. In the end, the cyclepath swapped places with the pedestrian part compared to the originally intended arrangement.

As a result, in the section already implemented along the faculty, pedestrian traffic is now directed closer to the road on an asphalt strip originally intended for cyclists, while cycling traffic is newly directed onto a paved surface closer to the faculty building.
