Nad Kazankou: The second longest contraflow bike lane in Prague

This contraflow bike lane, approximately 900 meters long, primarily facilitates local connections, and given the length of the street, it can significantly shorten the journey for locals. At the same time, it can provide a quieter alternative for passing through the area. Besides the main bike route A2, which diverges along the Vltava, in the built-up area of Troja the only alternative is Trojská Street, which sees quite heavy traffic, including frequent buses heading to the zoo.

The initiative for the creation of the contraflow bike lane was submitted in 2022 by a member of the MNK editorial team as a citizen (not the author of the article, ed.). Although the Prague-Troja municipal district is a self-governing territory, the state administration here is carried out by the Prague 7 transport department, which thus established the relevant traffic signage.

The contraflow bike lane is marked at both the entrance and exit with a protected bike lane, which increases the safety of cyclists at those locations, which are often the most risky in terms of cyclists and motorists passing each other. Throughout the street, the oncoming traffic of bicycle transportation is reminded by occasional sharrows directing people traveling down the street more towards its center, where visibility is best. Passing naturally involves mutual avoidance; the sharrows are only informative signage. At the same time, speed cushions were removed in areas where a bicycle passage corridor is anticipated.
