The Central Bohemian Region has a new cycling development concept for the next six years, until 2030. The priority is on backbone routes, but also on the development and maintenance of the current network. This is the main strategic document for cycling transportation in the region.

The council recommended its approval to the regional representatives on Thursday, Josef Holek from the regional office informed ČTK.

The document also includes information about the current state of cycling in the region and the needs of cities and municipalities for its development. It focuses on practicality and the real possibilities for constructing new paths. “Therefore, we invited cities, municipalities, and other entities to collaborate. We wanted to know their opinions, their capabilities, and their wishes. Suggestions were taken into account in the drafting of proposals for additions and modifications to the backbone, regional, and local cycling networks,” said Petr Borecký (STAN), the regional councilor for public transport.

In the Central Bohemian Region, there are 503 kilometers of bike routes. However, they often lack connectivity. The network is also not evenly distributed across the region. “We want the concept to serve to some extent as a methodological guide or example for other regions, so that a comprehensive network of paths and routes can be established in the Czech Republic, including their classification and categorization. We are preparing a meeting for all regional cycling coordinators where we will, for example, address the unification of terminology, categorization, etc.,” Borecký added.

Among other plans, the Central Bohemian Region also intends to focus on the integration of bicycle transportation into the PID public transport system. Once the document has been discussed by the representatives, an environmental impact assessment (SEA) should follow, as well as the inclusion of missing sections of the backbone routes into the Principles of Spatial Development as public benefit constructions, and the approval of the maximum purchase price of lands affected by the construction.

The proposed layout of the bike routes according to the new concept can be interactively viewed here. The concept itself is available for download on the region’s website. For comparison, the currently valid concept, last updated in 2020, can also be viewed.

Among the routes that are relatively close to implementation is, for example, the section of the path between Zdiby and Klecánky. Many other sections of the Vltava cycle path, such as the section between Úholičky, Řež, and Libčice, already have the documents prepared for the application for a building permit.
