The Railway Administration’s additional plans complicated the plan for a railway promenade in Prague 10

The original railway line through Strašnice was decommissioned at the end of 2020 following the construction of a new railway corridor with stops at Eden and Zahradní Město. The city plans to transform the former railway track into a recreational area with greenery and pedestrian and bicycle connections spanning over four kilometers. Last year, the city council obtained a zoning decision to build what is referred to as the railway promenade.

However, construction cannot start until an agreement is reached with SŽ, which holds the necessary land. “We are currently seeking a technical solution for the construction with the general director of SŽ. This could involve granting part of SŽ’s land and redirecting the affected section of the promenade, which conflicts with the planned high-speed railway line, to an alternative route,” said Valovič.

Friebová added that SŽ is currently working on the documentation for the high-speed railway between Vršovice and Běchovice and on a feasibility study for the Prague railway node, which is expected to propose ways to increase the capacity of the railway network in the capital. “The lands will be released immediately after we finalize the technical solution, so that all plans for the affected area can be realized without unnecessary delay. It should take a matter of months, however, everything will depend on the cooperation with the city and its districts,” said the spokesperson.

The city is now preparing an update to its Sustainable Mobility Plan through 2026, which includes a new list of priority investments. Due to a lack of funds, the city leadership wants to limit this list, and some projects, such as the railway promenade, the Radlická radial, and the reconstruction of the transport terminal at Černý Most, have been removed from the priority list. Valovič stated that removing the promenade from the city’s priorities is extremely unfortunate.
