In September 2023, the Prague 7 district introduced school streets at three elementary schools and kindergartens in the Letná area. After an entire school year, the functioning of these streets is evaluated positively, and parents at all schools welcome them in surveys.

The school streets in Prague 7 involve placing a „no entry for motor vehicles“ sign, which is valid from 7:00 to 8:00 AM. This regime is in place on Gerstnerova, Umělecká, and U Studánky streets at FZŠ Umělecká and MŠ U Studánky, on Letohradská and Fr. Křížka streets at ZŠ and MŠ Letohradská, and finally on Skalecká street in front of the local ZŠ and MŠ.

Majority of parents welcome the measure

The district gathered the opinions of children and parents through surveys at the schools. At two schools, nearly 250 parents filled out the surveys, and at ZŠ Letohradská, 120 parents responded. More than half of the students always participated.

According to Pavel Zelenka, the councilor for transport (Praha sobě), three-quarters of parents welcome the introduction of school streets. Almost 50% of parents at all schools rate this measure as excellent, and another 25% view it as a positive step. Most parents (65-80%) praise the increased safety for children and the reduction in pollution. Over 50% of parents believe the new school streets contribute to a more convenient journey to school, while around 20% do not notice any change. Less than 10% of parents reported a decrease in their children’s convenience.

„I don’t worry as much about my son, and he can walk to school more safely on his own,“ one parent noted in the survey, and another added, „My daughter isn’t afraid to walk by herself; cars don’t park on the sidewalk.“

Less Mama taxi's

A total of 80 percent of parents who participated in the survey stated that their children commute to school on foot or in combination with public transport. About 20 percent of parents drive their children to school. After the introduction of the school street, some parents stopped driving their children to school.

The most polarizing impact is on traffic around the school. More than 30% see an improvement, 20-30% say the situation has remained unchanged, and 15-20% report a worsening, mostly among those who drive their children to school.
