A new path for cyclists and pedestrians will connect the Jižní Svahy housing estate with the main cycling route in Zlín. Work will begin in August, with completion planned for the summer holidays of 2025, city hall spokesperson Tomáš Melzer told ČTK in mid-June.

The path will be 1.4 kilometers long. The estimated cost is 43 million CZK, and the city has obtained a European grant.

„I took on this project as a personal task when I took office. It wasn’t easy, but the important thing is the result, which is a new mixed-use cycle path along Okružní Street, running past the Vertikon climbing wall. We managed to negotiate conditions that everyone agreed to. I thank everyone who participated in this project and contributed with their work or by easing their conditions for its implementation,“ said Deputy Mayor Michal Čížek (ANO).

The project includes the modernization of trolleybus stops and the construction of two pedestrian and cyclist crossings. „These changes will not only improve safety but also facilitate movement and connections between different parts of the city. Users of the shared path can look forward to the connection to the existing cycle path on Mladcovská Street. This construction will also connect Luční Street and extend further to the existing cycle path near the U Baďurů restaurant,“ said the spokesperson. The project also includes the relocation of traction poles, and additional lighting for the path and new crossings.

„The work is expected to be completed in 2025, but it is difficult to estimate the exact date now because we are facing a challenging summer, and in the first phase the work will begin in a way that does not jeopardize the implementation of other investment projects in the city,“ said Čížek. Around Vertikon, the construction work must adapt to summer closures and must not endanger detour routes. „Given that the Directorate of Roads and Highways is planning major repairs in the city center, we do not want to, as they say, add fuel to the fire with further narrowing of roads or traffic restrictions at key junctions,“ Čížek said.
