Liberec has completed the reconstruction of one of the city’s main traffic arteries. Sokolská Street now features a designated bike lane, more greenery, and improved pedestrian connections. The street reopened on Monday, September 30.
Sokolská Street, a heavily trafficked and key route in the city center that forms part of the inner city loop, received a brand-new surface and layout. The improvements cover a 400-meter stretch between Zhořelecká and Pastýřská streets.
„When designing this, we took into account local residents who live near this frequently used road. The street has been calmed with greenery and green islands. We’ve planted nearly 40 new trees there. At the same time, the road still allows cars to pass through smoothly and safely. We also thought about the future. We anticipate that a new boulevard and residential development will be built here, fully revealing the benefits of this urban street design,“ said Jiří Janďourek, Deputy Mayor for Architecture, Public Space, and Transport Infrastructure (STAN for the Liberec Region).
„We built the street to meet the standards commonly used in modern European cities. It’s not just for cars. It will serve cyclists and pedestrians excellently, all while ensuring maximum comfort and safety,“ points out the mayor of Liberec, Jaroslav Zámečník (STAN for the Liberec Region).
The street is part of the planned LB9 bike route, which connects the Růžodol district, the city center, and the Botanical Garden.
The designers of Sokolská took inspiration from Scandinavia. The city, together with the Liberec Region, invested nearly 71 million CZK in the renovation and modernization, with the city contributing 43 million CZK and the region adding 28 million CZK.
Currently, street and sidewalk reconstruction is one of the city’s top priorities. Compared to previous years, Liberec has already started and completed 33 transport projects this year, worth more than 330 million CZK—about five times more than in past years. The political goal is to repair at least 50 streets during the four-year election term.
