A major change has taken place in the cycling infrastructure of Hradec Králové’s historic center – Mýtská Street has become a two-way cycle lane. This street can now be used by cyclists not only heading into the center but also exiting from it. The change improves access to the city center by bike and enhances the overall permeability of the city.
Until now, Mýtská Street was one-way, allowing passage only towards the center. This changes with the new traffic measure: the two-way cycle lane allows cycling in both directions. Cyclists no longer need to use Kopeček Street or walk their bikes to leave the center. The two-way cycle lane opens a new legal route out of the center, connecting to Komenského Street, which forms part of the historic center loop. On the other end, Mýtská Street connects to Malé Square, with a route extending to Velké Square.
The two-way cycle lane on Mýtská Street is marked not only with the necessary additional signs but also with an opposing-direction pictogram corridor, which in narrower sections warns of cyclists moving against traffic and enhances their safety.
The measure was implemented as part of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, which Hradec Králové is gradually fulfilling. The action plan also includes the removal of barriers in urban spaces, which directly encompasses two-way cycle lanes. “Removing these barriers directly improves access to the city center for sustainable transportation,” city representatives state in the document. The advantages of two-way cycle lanes include low financial demands and quick implementation.
The two-way cycle lane on Mýtská Street is not the only project of its kind. Hradec Králové recently marked a two-way cycle lane on Škroupova Street, which connects to a newly built footbridge over the Labe River near the ČSOB building. A cycle path along Bratří Štefanů Street is also being planned.
On the other hand, the redevelopment of the Mileta intersection in the city center into a grade-separated junction can be considered a step backward. Surface crossings and cycling infrastructure will be removed, and pedestrians and cyclists will have to share narrow underpasses. In the future, parking at Velké Square is also expected to be removed, with cars likely moving underground. The surface area is planned to become a shared zone.
