Prague 2 now offers cyclists safe parking directly on the street. The city district has completed the installation of bike stands at around ten locations. The silver structures, each accommodating up to six bicycles, were mainly placed in front of crosswalks where bicycle parking was previously only marked with paint.
“We don’t want bicycle parking to take up space meant for pedestrians. The roadway is a more logical place for bike stands,” explained Transport Councilor Tomáš Halva (TOP 09). Although the implementation was delayed due to supply issues, all planned stands have now been installed and are operational.
Besides their practical use, the on-street stands also improve safety. They help prevent illegal car parking in visibility zones near intersections, improving sightlines for both pedestrians and drivers. At the same time, they send a clear signal to cyclists that the street—not the sidewalk—is the proper place to ride. This type of infrastructure is a standard feature in most Western European cities.
Due to concerns about permanently occupying road space, the stands are anchored in a way that allows for easy removal if needed—for example, during changes in traffic layout or for road maintenance and cleaning. This ensures flexibility.
The exact locations of all the stands can be found on the Prague 2 website or in the Městem na kole map. They are approximately at the following intersections:
