The Prague Metro Will Not Ban E-Bikes After All; Removing the Battery Will Be Sufficient

Bicycles now allowed through almost all metro doors

Until now, it was only possible to board the metro with a bicycle through the first and last doors of each carriage, with the exception of the leading carriage, where the space behind the driver’s cabine had to remain clear.

From January, the rules are being simplified:

• With a conventional, non-motorized bicycle, it is possible to board through any door, except for the first door in the direction of travel behind the driver’s cabine.
• A maximum of two bicycles may be in one space at the same time, and there is an obligation not to endanger other passengers, to keep the bicycle under control, and to respect the priority of strollers and wheelchairs for people with disabilities.

E-bikes and electric scooters: only without the battery

A major change concerns e-bikes, electric scooters, and other personal transport devices with electric propulsion. These may not be transported in the metro at all, even when folded.

An exception applies to e-bikes with the battery removed—in that case, they are treated the same as a regular bicycle without a drive unit, and their transport in the metro is permitted under the same conditions. For most e-bikes on the market, the battery can be removed easily.

Trams, buses, and more

On trams, the transport of bicycles remains permitted only on selected sections and in specified directions. E-bikes may be transported there if passenger capacity allows and if the driver does not refuse the transport.

On buses, bicycles are allowed only on specially adapted vehicles (e.g., those equipped with bike racks).

On the Petřín funicular (currently closed for reconstruction) and in the metro, the transport of e-bikes is prohibited (with the exception of having the battery removed). On PID vessels, transport is possible by arrangement with the crew.

Other changes

The updated PID transport conditions also introduce a higher fine for traveling without a valid ticket and other fare adjustments. At the same time, the transport authority recommends updating the PID Lítačka app so that passengers have access to current information and correct fare settings.
