Bratislava Opens First “Dutch-Style” Bicycle Street

New asphalt, fresh road markings, and an updated spatial layout have created a roadway where cyclists have natural priority and riding is more comfortable and safer.

What is a bicycle street?

A “bicycle street” is a new type of road introduced into Slovak legislation through an amendment to the Road Traffic Act and the traffic-signing decree, effective since April 2020.

Cyclists may use the full width of the lane, the speed limit is 30 km/h, and overtaking is allowed only with a 1.5-meter passing distance. Motor vehicles may enter only if permitted by an additional sign.

Czech cycling zones vs. Bicycle streets

Czech legislation does not recognize the term bicycle street. The closest equivalent is the cycling zone, introduced in 2016. It is marked with signs IZ 9a and IZ 9b and applies to a defined area. Here too, the speed limit is 30 km/h, cyclists may use the full width of the roadway, and entry of other vehicles is allowed only if indicated on the sign.

The difference lies in the concept. In Slovakia, it is a distinct type of road designated by a new sign, whereas in the Czech Republic it is an area-based measure that defines the traffic regime within a certain part of the city.

The significance of the measure

The new section on R33 is the first practical example of a bicycle street in Slovakia that is not implemented only through traffic signage but also through physical construction. Thanks to the red asphalt and prominent markings, the space of the bicycle street is easier to read.

According to the city district, the measure is intended to improve the comfort of everyday travel—whether it’s commuting to work, going to school, or taking weekend trips.
